Marcoliani

Milan, Italy

What Marcoliani is known for

Italian hosiery manufacturer founded 1947 near Milan by Giuseppe Gatti; renamed Marcoliani in the 1980s by his children in honor of a family friend, it knits Pima cotton, merino and cashmere socks, still made in Italy.

Marcoliani's story begins not with socks but with silkworms: in 1947, Giuseppe Gatti started breeding them in his attic in the Brianza district near Milan, selling the cocoons to local silk mills before a family connection led him into hosiery. In the 1980s his children took over and renamed the company Marcoliani, after 'Marculian,' the dialect nickname of the friend who had helped their father into the trade. Production has stayed rooted in Paina di Giussano, in Brianza. The company works with premium Italian yarns - Pima cotton, merino wool, cashmere, modal, and linen-cotton blends - and its socks are sold in more than 500 stores worldwide while remaining Made in Italy.
