Off-White

Milan, Italy

What Off-White is known for

Virgil Abloh’s quotation-marked legacy — diagonal stripes, "SHOELACES" and streetwear’s museum moment. Italian company founded in Milan in 2013 by a Chicago-born designer; first Milan retail door only in 2020 (WWD/Hypebeast). Precursor project Pyrex Vision launched December 2012.

Virgil Abloh founded Off-White in Milan in 2013 with a thesis he stated openly: streetwear could operate at fashion's highest register, and irony — quotation marks around "SHOELACES," around everything — was a design material. The diagonal stripes, the red zip-tie left on Nike collaborations, the crosswalk arrows: he built a visual language teenagers could read at fifty meters and museums could footnote.

The Ten, his 2017 deconstruction of Nike's icons, is arguably the most influential sneaker project ever; the Louis Vuitton menswear appointment in 2018 made him the first Black artistic director of a French heritage house, and Off-White's Paris shows became the decade's cultural crossroads — Serena Williams' tutu dress, "FOR WALKING" boots, Princess Diana moodboards.

Abloh died in 2021 at 41, having reframed who fashion is for; the Brooklyn Museum's "Figures of Speech" retrospective sealed the museum moment his label had joked about. LVMH took a majority in 2021 and sold the brand to Bluestar Alliance in 2024 — the quotation marks now around the word "legacy," earned.
