What Spiewak is known for

New York outerwear house founded in 1904 in Brooklyn by Polish immigrant Isaac Spiewak, who hand-sewed sheepskin vests sold on the Williamsburg docks; later outfitted NY State mounted troopers (1923) and NYC transit and postal uniforms.

Isaac Spiewak grew up in Warsaw and fled to the United States in 1903. Settling in Brooklyn, he began making sheepskin vests by hand and selling them on the docks of Williamsburg starting in 1904 - the year the company now dates itself to. Demand grew quickly enough that by 1906 he had established a small dedicated manufacturing space in Brooklyn, which he named the "House of the Golden Fleece."

The company moved from workwear into uniform contracts over the following decades. In 1923, Spiewak supplied its first police jackets, outfitting New York State's mounted troopers - an early entry into the municipal-uniform business that became a core part of the company's identity. It later expanded that uniform relationship to New York City's MTA subway conductors and United States Postal Service letter carriers.

In the early 1960s, Marty Spiewak developed a heavy-duty material the company branded Titan Cloth, originally engineered for truck seat covers rather than garments; it was later adapted into the Titan outerwear line that remains one of the brand's signature products. The company today also produces other named product lines, including VizGuard safety wear, WeatherTech waterproof-breathable outerwear, and Golden Fleece industrial outerwear, tracing a continuous line from Isaac Spiewak's hand-sewn dockside vests to a multi-generation uniform and outerwear manufacturer.
