Pracownia bro.Kat, founded more than a decade ago in Katowice's Załęże district, sets real coal into silver for cufflinks, rings, and earrings, a nod to Silesia's old nickname for the mineral, "black gold." Bogna Polańska and her partner Roma run the studio from Gliwicka 188/3, a few blocks from the district's former mine workings.
Designer Marta Szafraniec casts brass and silver rings modeled on Katowice landmarks — the modernist "Kukurydze" apartment towers, the Spodek arena, and the Silesian Insurgents Monument — from her workshop in the city center. One porcelain piece in the collection is shaped after a traditional Silesian dumpling-pinching tool.
Ceramicist Beata Mutke throws and glazes clay and porcelain jewelry, bowls, and tableware from a studio in Nikiszowiec, the UNESCO-recognized red-brick miners' housing estate. Her gallery at Antoniego Czechowa 5/4 also runs hands-on ceramics workshops for visitors.
