Ask what the piece is made of: ask for the timber or metal and how the joints are made.
Ask for a lead time: made-to-order furniture can take months, so agree a delivery date before paying a deposit.
Ask about delivery abroad: ask who arranges crating and insurance for a large piece, and who pays the import duties.

Espartería San José has traded from Calle Jáudenes 3 in Granada since Antonio Rosales Yañez opened it in 1907 to sell tools to farm people from the surrounding villages. The fifth generation of the family now runs it. It buys from small local artisans working esparto grass and wicker, along with anea rush and wood. Shelves hold olive wood mortars and esparto lamps. Wicker trunks stand beside palmito stools and coils of hemp cordage.
Best for Esparto baskets, olive-wood mortars and wicker from Granada artisans
Antonio Rosales Yañez opened the Espartería San José in 1907 to sell tools for the countryside. Farm people from the villages around Granada came to Calle Jáudenes, as did carriers from the Valle de Lecrin and the Alpujarra and workers from the cortijos of the province. They bought tool handles and halters. Sickles hung beside sieves. Salt stones sat with cowbells, and packsaddles were sold alongside rush-seated chairs. Two artisans worked on the premises in those years. Vargas worked leather and packsaddlery, and Garrote, a picador by trade, made saddlery whose kind has now all but vanished from the fields. The shop says it has come through a civil war and deep economic crises without leaving Calle Jáudenes or the premises it has always occupied. The fifth generation of the family now runs it. It continues to buy from small artisans of the Granada area who still work esparto grass and wicker, along with anea rush and wood. The shop frames that trade as support for local craft and for the local economy. The stock has widened from farm gear to household goods. Olive wood mortars and salad bowls share the shelves with boards and cutlery. Esparto lamps and mirrors hang beside planters and rugs, and esparto blinds are cut to order. Wicker trunks and picnic baskets sit next to palmito stools and children's chairs. The address is Calle Jáudenes 3, and the shop also sells through its own website.
Founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto with Maire Gullichsen to sell furniture and 'propaganda for modernism', Artek still makes Stool 60 and the Aalto canon. Its Helsinki flagship at Keskuskatu 1 B occupies an Eliel Saarinen-designed building; the two-level shop carries the full Artek collection, including Stool 60 and the Domus Chair, alongside home textiles, carpets, books and a stool-customization workshop.
Best for Aalto furniture from the source; Stool 60, Domus Chair, home textiles and stool customization
Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The four idealists wrote a manifesto that set out to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living through exhibitions and education. Aino Aalto served as the first Design Director and from 1941 as Managing Director. She led the interior design division called the Drawing Office. Gullichsen, a painter trained in Paris and Helsinki, brought exhibitions of Picasso, Leger and Calder to Finland and founded the Artek Gallery in 1950. Hahl, an art historian, was the first Managing Director until his death at the front in 1941. The furniture rests on Alvar Aalto's L-leg, developed with manufacturer Otto Korhonen in the late 1920s. That bent solid wood leg made more than fifty products possible. The Helsinki store at Keskuskatu 1 B opened in March 2016 in a building designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1921, opposite the Stockmann department store. Two floors of about 700 square metres hold the Artek collection alongside Vitra and other Finnish and international brands. Interior design services are offered, and a workshop customises Stool 60 on site. Artek marked its 90th anniversary in 2025 with a summer exhibition at the store and an Artek + Moomin collection engraved with Tove Jansson's drawings.
Poltrona Frau has made leather furniture in Tolentino, Marche since 1912, using its own Pelle Frau saddle-grade leather. The house is known for the Chester sofa and a century of leather upholstery made at that same Italian workshop.
Founded 1966 in Novedrate as C&B Italia by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and Cesare Cassina, renamed B&B in 1973; HQ is a 1972 building by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Mario Bellini's modular Camaleonda sofa, launched 1970, was reissued in 2020.
Best for Camaleonda and modern sofas.
B&B Italia began in 1966 in Novedrate, in Italy's Como province, when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli started a furniture venture with Cesare Cassina under the name C&B Italia and ten employees. Busnelli had identified an opportunity in cold-forming polyurethane molding, a technology not yet widely applied to furniture production, and used it to build upholstered pieces industrially rather than through traditional frame-and-stuffing methods. In 1973 Busnelli bought out Cassina's stake and renamed the company B&B. The Novedrate headquarters is itself a design landmark: a 1972 building designed by a young Renzo Piano together with Richard Rogers, several years before the pair's Centre Pompidou in Paris. B&B's design output produced three Compasso d'Oro award winners — Mario Bellini's Le Bambole armchair (1972), Studio Kairos's Sisamo wardrobe system (1983), and Antonio Citterio's Sity sofa (1987) — alongside Bellini's modular Camaleonda sofa, launched in 1970 and shown at MoMA's 1972 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape' exhibition. Camaleonda's cable-and-hook modular construction let owners reconfigure or disassemble seating sections; the design went out of production in 1979 and was reissued in 2020 using recycled materials.
Italian avant-garde furniture house founded 1954 in Nova Milanese by Aurelio Zanotta, collaborating with experimental designers to produce radical postmodern design.
Best for The Sacco beanbag original.
Aurelio Zanotta founded the furniture company in Nova Milanese in 1954, initially focusing on traditional upholstered pieces. The company rapidly shifted toward experimental design, commissioning forward-thinking Italian designers including the Castiglioni brothers, Joe Colombo, and Ettore Sottsass. By the 1960s and 1970s, Zanotta had become known for producing some of the world's most significant postmodern and radical design works. The Sacco armchair, designed in 1968 by Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro, became an international icon—the first beanbag chair, filled with polystyrene balls that molded to the user's form. Other landmark pieces include the Mezzadro tractor stool by the Castiglioni brothers. Over its history, Zanotta has collaborated with over 140 designers from 18 countries and produced more than 550 products, with 336 works now held in permanent museum collections worldwide including the Triennale Design Museum Milan, Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris, and London's V&A.
Dutch design house founded in 2001 in Amsterdam by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers, producing theatrical furniture and lighting. Its Amsterdam brand store and showroom opened in the Jordaan in 2008 before later relocating to Utrechtsestraat.
Best for Bold theatrical Dutch design.
Moooi was founded in the Netherlands in 2001 by designer Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. The name plays on the Dutch word 'mooi' (beautiful), with an added third 'o' meant to signal extra aesthetic value. The brand built its identity around bold, theatrical furniture and lighting design, with Wanders himself among its best-known designers. Its flagship Amsterdam showroom and brand store launched in 2008 in the Jordaan district, on Westerstraat, where it operated for around fourteen years with Wanders' own design studio located directly above; the store later relocated to Utrechtsestraat, still in central Amsterdam. Moooi has since expanded into an internationally distributed brand sold through showrooms, retail partners and its own e-commerce.
Bangkok furniture workshop housed in a 1940s Art Deco warehouse on the Chao Phraya riverside, building bespoke pieces from reclaimed hardwood and sand-cast brass through a seven-step process.
Best for Contemporary furniture crafted from reclaimed hardwood in a Bangkok workshop
P.Tendercool operates from a 1940s Art Deco building — Warehouse 30 — in the Creative District of old Bangkok, next to the Chao Phraya River, in the Charoen Krung area. The operation is split across two adjacent spaces: PT-Gallery, the showroom, and PT-Lab, a workshop roughly a five-minute walk away where the pieces are made.
The workshop specializes in bespoke, handmade furniture for private clients, interior designers and hospitality projects, built around reclaimed hardwood combined with sand-cast brass bases and other custom metalwork. It promotes a defined '7-step bespoke service' emphasizing craftsmanship transparency from material sourcing through fabrication, and pieces are made individually by named craftsmen rather than produced on a factory line. The workshop backs its furniture with a lifetime guarantee and takes on hospitality and hotel commissions alongside private residential work.

Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri founded Bokja in Beirut in 2000, naming it after the embroidered velvet wrapping that once held a bride's dowry. The studio repairs mid-century furniture frames found in Beirut flea markets and covers them in Levantine and Silk Road textiles, some a century old. Quilts, headboards, tapestries, ready-to-wear now sit alongside the furniture. Local artisans do the work, and a share of proceeds goes to women's organisations.
Best for Statement embroidered furniture, textiles and homeware
Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri joined forces in Beirut in 2000, and the studio still prints that year under its own name. Hibri had sold antique furniture and Baroudi had collected old tapestries and textiles on every trip abroad. The name they chose is an old Turkish word for the embroidered velvet wrapping that held a bride's dowry. The method follows from both halves of that partnership. Bokja finds furniture frames from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s in Beirut flea markets and antique dealerships, repairs them and then covers them in textiles from the Levant and the Silk Road countries of Central Asia. Uzbek fabrics, Damascene brocade and Chinese silk end up on the same frame, and a single chair can carry more than twenty patterns. Some of the embroideries are a century old. The studio employs local artisans and gives a share of proceeds to organisations working with women. The range now runs past furniture into quilts, headboards, tapestries, ready-to-wear and accessories, with pieces sold as artistic interventions. Christian Louboutin took Bokja furniture into his own shoe boutiques after visiting the Beirut studio.

The range covers jellabas and abayas for women and men, mother-of-pearl furniture and hand-embroidered pieces. Showrooms operate in Beirut and Dubai, with an online store that ships worldwide.
Best for Elegant clothing and refined home décor blending Lebanese artistry with regional influences
Orient 499 was founded in Beirut in 2006 by Frank Luca and Aida Kawas. They set out to build a Lebanese brand conceived in the country and produced there as well. For more than eighteen years the house has worked with artisans across Lebanon. It now employs over 200 of them directly and indirectly. Coppersmiths in Tripoli hand-hammer tableware to designs developed with the studio. Glass artisans in Sidon blow decanters and glassware. Soap makers and carpenters supply the rest of the range, together with embroiderers and couturiers. The clothing side runs to jellabas and abayas for women and men, some in Loro Piana cashmere. A made-to-order jellaba service sits beside the ready-made pieces. At home the offer covers hand-carved mother-of-pearl furniture as well as mirrors and lighting. The Mida collection of tables and stools was designed with the Lebanese duo david/nicolas. The Met Store in New York invited Orient 499 into its Heirloom Project. For it the house produced a handblown glass decanter after a 19th-century bottle in the museum's collection, and a jasmine-scented soap shaped like a grape cluster. The Beirut showroom stands at 499 Omar Daouk Street in Mina El Hosn. A second showroom operates at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, and the online store ships worldwide from Lebanon.

Lemaire's rue Elzévir store presents clothing and accessories from the house led by Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran. Opened in 2023, the Marais premises pair the collections with handmade tiles and furniture within the interior. The clothes favour modular silhouettes and layering, while fabric sourcing spans Europe and Japan rather than one origin.
Best for Lemaire clothing and accessories in the Marais
Lemaire opened its rue Elzévir flagship in the Marais in March 2023, moving into a larger Paris retail setting. The house is led by Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran, whose collections develop clothing intended for repeated combinations. Modular shapes and layering are recurring parts of that approach, alongside attention to fabric and construction.
The shop's interior adds another set of materials to the clothes and accessories on display. Handmade bejmat tiles and abaca mats sit alongside wooden furniture and ceramic stands across the space. These elements belong to the presentation of the shop, rather than proving how every garment is produced.
A visit is most useful for someone considering the relationship between individual pieces within a wardrobe. The clothing can be considered together with the house's accessories instead of as a series of isolated seasonal purchases. Fabrics come primarily from Europe and Japan, according to the house's account of its production approach. That is a statement about sourcing and should not be mistaken for a universal country of garment manufacture.

The Socialite Family began in 2013 as Constance Gennari's media title photographing Parisian families at home. In 2017 it launched a furniture and lighting line, designed in Paris and made by workshops in Europe, mainly in Italy and France. Gennari remains founder and artistic director. The house sells online and through its own boutiques.
Best for Constance Gennari's furniture, inspired by photographing real Parisian family homes
The Socialite Family started in 2013 as a media title. Constance Gennari began photographing friends at home with their families, drawn to a door detail or a line of furniture that told a story about how they lived. Those portraits of interiors grew a readership. In 2017 the company launched its own furniture line, run from an in-house creative studio in Paris. The collections of furniture and lighting are designed in Paris and made by workshops in Europe, mainly in Italy and France. The house describes its signature as a homage to Italy, the country closest to Gennari's heart. Materials and proportion are the stated priorities, along with the handwork of the artisans who build the pieces. The site continues to publish family portraits alongside the shop, and a linen range sits beside the furniture. Large pieces are delivered by white-glove service to the floor of the customer's choice. The brand runs a programme for architects and decorators as well as a network of resellers. Gennari remains founder and artistic director. She now works with a team rather than alone, as the site puts it. The company operates physical boutiques as well as the online store, and a professional programme serves the trade.
Porto concept store founded by designers Alzira Peixoto and Carlos Mendonca, opened October 2021 at Rua de Miguel Bombarda 285, selling Portuguese-made cork housewares - lamps, birdhouses, bathtubs and placemats.
Best for Portuguese cork turned into contemporary accessories and home objects
Cork Matters is a Porto retail concept created by designers Alzira Peixoto and Carlos Mendonca under their design studio Simple Forms Design, which had already worked with cork for about 17 years before opening a dedicated storefront in October 2021 at Rua de Miguel Bombarda 285, in the city's Bombarda design quarter. The shop sells home objects made entirely from Portuguese cork and produced within Portugal, including table lamps, birdhouses, bathtubs and placemats. The founders' stated aim is to demonstrate cork's versatility beyond wine stoppers and flooring.

Arquivo Contemporâneo is a Rio de Janeiro design showroom selling furniture and lighting by Brazilian names like Sergio Rodrigues and Oscar Niemeyer. It has a second Rio location at CasaShopping and a showroom in Brasília.
Best for Rio de Janeiro design showroom in Ipanema selling Brazilian furniture and lighting
Arquivo Contemporâneo bills itself simply as "o melhor do design brasileiro" — the best of Brazilian design — and its catalogue backs up the claim. The Rio de Janeiro showroom, with a second address inside the CasaShopping mall and a further outpost in Brasília, deals in furniture, lighting, and objects by the country's best-known modern and contemporary designers: Sergio Rodrigues, Oscar Niemeyer, Jorge Zalszupin, Isay Weinfeld, Arthur Casas, Claudia Moreira Salles, and Jader Almeida all appear on its designer roster, alongside imported Vitra pieces sold at outlet prices.
The Ipanema store, on Rua Redentor, is the original address; CasaShopping, in Rio's Barra da Tijuca district, is the larger-format location, open through weekends and holidays. Beyond retail, Arquivo Contemporâneo regularly builds installations for Casa Cor Rio, the annual interior-design showcase, having staged rooms and spaces there across multiple recent editions — evidence of a business that positions itself as part of Rio's design scene rather than just a furniture retailer.

BEAKER is a Seoul multi-brand retailer bringing Korean and international fashion together with selected goods for everyday living. Its Cheongdam shop uses reclaimed furniture and door panels within an interior that also displays accessories and lifestyle products. Hannam and Cheongdam opened in 2012, while the later Seongsu flagship introduced another location with its own layout.
Best for Korean and international designer clothing in Seoul
BEAKER's Seoul shops combine clothing from Korean and international labels with a wider selection of lifestyle products. The retailer opened in Hannam and Cheongdam in 2012, according to its parent company's account of the business. A third flagship followed in Seongsu in November 2022, giving the group another distinct shopping space.
The Cheongdam location is listed at 408 Apgujeong-ro by the local tourism service. Its interior incorporates discarded mother-of-pearl cabinets as displays and old door panels as fitting rooms. That setting accompanies contemporary clothing and accessories rather than a shop devoted to selling reclaimed furniture. The assortment described by the tourism listing extends to cosmetics and items for the home, with pet products also included.
Seongsu's opening account describes a three-floor layout that separates a lifestyle and pop-up area from clothing collections above. Those details belong to Seongsu, not to the Cheongdam address. A shopper choosing between the branches should therefore check the intended location rather than assume every store shares the same floor plan. The common thread is a multi-brand selection, not a single designer's complete collection.
